Proposed Renovation & Design

The architectural intention is to ultimately give the Whangamata community a finished building that is truly fitting given its central location on our beautiful beach-front, and one that all involved can be very proud of and that will stand the test of time.

Because the required renovation is extensive and to ensure longevity, the club will also carry out a number of additional upgrades to improve operational efficiencies and provide a facility for a wide variety of occasions and needs.

The Building Condition Assessment document from Prendos (May 2021) can be viewed or downloaded here.

Renovation

The renovation will include:

  • Major structural reinforcement of most load-bearing areas to meet seismic compliance
  • Replacement of all external cladding on both the main building and the bunkhouse, all decking, the roof, the rear stairs of the bunkroom, and all beds and mattresses
  • Conversion of all lighting to more cost-effective LEDs.

Design of the new clubrooms

Design aspects of the new clubrooms include construction of:

At present the office is upstairs, difficult for the public to locate and cold in the winter. The new addition will interface with the present annex entrance and provide an informative reception area, storage room and improved access to the first floor. The office will include a bi-fold door so it can be used for small meetings with the club manager.

This will provide a covered access to the first floor, increased annex area for junior surf storage, and a dedicated committee room on the first floor. This side internal access will be additional to the present rapid-fire compliance exit and provide better security without having to use the current deck and sliding doors as an entrance-way. A new access footpath will join with the main front entrance.

Eliminating the present narrow and steep stairway that is difficult to see and dangerous for lifeguards exiting the tower, when responding to emergencies.

To enable a larger area to be made available for larger audience training sessions and off season activities.

That gives greater functionality, visibility and rapid response in emergencies.

Joins both decks and gives improved access.
